I think the most bittersweet kind of first is a last first. Today is the first day of school for my younger child, my daughter Lily. As a 6th grader, it will be her last first day in elementary school, and I’m feeling it.

It’s the last first day of school she wears her sweet, soft pink uniform to school. It’s the last first day of school I take her photo in front of her new classroom. It’s the last first day of school I walk in and greet her new teachers. It’s the last first day of school I kiss her goodbye and hug her a little too long. It’s these last firsts that have me blinking back tears and wanting to freeze time.

Since it’s a big day, we’re going to celebrate and turn up the volume an old favorite. Lily’s favorite treat is guacamole and chips.
